In 1989, six climbers from Colorado got together for a small expedition to the Southwest Ridge of Ama Dablam (22,494 feet) in the Khumbu region of Nepal. Just a few miles from Everest, our goal was one of the world's most spectacular peaks.
To make a long story short, we didn't make it but got very close. I was in a position to reach the topand was sure I could make itbut the descent would have been extremely dangerous. Not an easy decision when you're feeling strong on a perfect summit day. Despite the disappointment, and nagging doubt, we had a great trip and a wonderful experience. Someday I may go back in the post-monsoon. Afterwards, I spent a month traveling in Thailand and a week diving in Fiji...but those are other galleries yet to be scanned. |
